The 21 most interesting new vegan snacks

The 21 most interesting new vegan snacks

A few trends emerged for “healthy” snacking in 2018 at the country’s largest showcase of new natural foods, Natural Products Expo West: Vegan and gluten-free are in, while dairy and meat are out. “Puffs” made of every healthy-sounding ingredient imaginable, from moringa to Brussels sprouts, are also in vogue, as are peanut butter snacks, coconut jerky, dairy-free yogurt and ice cream, and anything probiotic. I sampled everything I could stomach or carry, and out of hundreds of vendors, these are my picks for the most interesting new vegan snacks of 2018.

Vegan Rob’s Jackfruit Puffs

A major trend in natural snacking is taking healthy veggies and turning them into salty puffs and chips. No one does this better than Vegan Rob’s, which makes these Jackfruit Puffs, as well as Brussels sprout, moringa, beet, and cauliflower varieties. There’s little added nutritional value, but they are pretty delicious.

Miyoko’s “Un-Lox Your Dreams” Vegan Cream Cheese

Miyoko’s is the gold standard in vegan cheese, and its new line of cream cheeses, hitting shelves soon, will not disappoint. For the lox lovers out there, this flavor makes a dreamy snack with some bagels or carrots.

Rollin Greens Millet Tots

These new vegan tots made with millet instead of potatoes were surprisingly tasty and unusual – crispy, not too greasy, and packed with nutrition.

Field Roast Miniature Corn Dogs

Vegan corn dogs are legit now, thanks to Field Roast, the brand that’s raised the bar for vegan sausages.

Don’t Go Nuts Chocolate Roasted Soybean Spread

I thought I’d had every nut butter and alternative to nut butter, but this chocolate soybean spread was definitely new to me. Turns out, soybeans make a tasty spread.

You might not think sauerkraut is a snack, but my partner – who’s been obsessed with this Golden Kraut since I brought it home – begs to differ as he eats it straight out of the jar. Flavored with turmeric, ginger, curry powder, and cayenne, this is a unique probiotic snack.

Square Organics Spicy Protein Popcorn

Popcorn is all the rage, and now more and more brands are adding extra vitamins and protein to the already-healthy snack. This protein popcorn packs 10 grams per serving.

Wildbrine Smoky Jalapeño Probiotic Sriracha

With peppers and tomatillos, this probiotic Sriracha is made by Wildbrine, a company mostly known for its sauerkraut. Wildbrine applies the same fermentation techniques to its hot sauce, and the result is quite tasty.

Farmwise Veggie Rings

These crispy veggie rings are less greasy and more nutritious than your average onion rings (two servings of vegetables for every 10 rings you munch), without sacrificing flavor.

Ruby Rockets Fruit & Veggie Pops

It’s hard to find a fudge pop that isn’t loaded with sugar, but Ruby Rockets uses only fruits and veggies to sweeten its pops. A new and improved recipe hitting stores soon adds coconut milk for more richness. The result is surprisingly indulgent for something with only five grams of fruit-based sugar.

Rhythm Superfoods Carrot Sticks

These freeze-dried carrots come in plain, salted, and ranch flavors, and they make a surprisingly tasty chip or salad topper.

Kracklin’ Kamut

Roasted kamut is now a to-go snack. Apparently, wheat is still in.

Jica Chili Lime Chips

Jicama chips make for a unique snack that has the potential to go more mainstream with its gluten-free, vegan and fiber-rich credentials.

Barnana Ridged Plantain Chips

The first ridged plantain chip (because, why not?), this snack is a novel take on plantain chips.

Akua Kelp Jerky

This kelp jerky is so new, it’s still on Kickstarter – but for lovers of both seaweed and jerky snacks, this is a salty revelation.

Wat-U-See Foods Popped Chickpeatos

It was only a matter of time before chickpea and green pea puffs were combined into one vegan and gluten-free snack.

Human Bean Co. Sea Salt and Vinegar Faba Beans

Roasted faba beans make a salty-but-protein-filled snack with this new item.

Lesser Evil Grain Free Paleo Puffs

These “Paleo Puffs” are also vegan and are made with cassava root and sweet potato.

Tosi Cashew Super Bites

These cashew bites stand out for simply being super tasty – like a peanut brittle, almost –without a bunch of added sugar, fillers, or salt. Highly recommended.

AvoLov Avocado Chips

Unlike other avocado chips that have barely a trace of actual avocado, these chips taste exactly like freeze-dried avocado with different seasonings.

Farmhouse Culture Kraut Krisps

Because who hasn’t had sauerkraut and thought, “This should be a chip”?
