May is here, FINALLY. It’s been a brutal winter and a late spring, but thankfully we’re bring rewarded with a first weekend of May that brings plenty of heat as well as Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby on the same day – in other words one epic day-drinking opportunity.
A lot of people think that Cinco de Mayo is just that one Mexican holiday that Americans have appropriated to wear sombreros, eat tacos and get trashed on tequila and Corona while having no idea what it is they are celebrating. And all of those less fortunate aspects of the holiday – which, FYI, was created to commemorate Mexico’s victory over the French in The Battle of Puebla – are true.
But equally true is that Cinco de Mayo is the unofficial start of Margarita Season.
The Margarita is the quintessential warm-weather drink; if summertime day-drinking had its own flag, the margarita would be logo smack dab in the center. It’s dangerously quaffable, incredibly refreshing, and – most important of all – stupidly easy to make.
There are only three ingredients to a classic marg. Just shake up some tequila, lime, and Cointreau and get ready to have the best time ever.

- 2 oz. blanco tequila
- 1 oz. Cointreau
- 1 oz. lime juice, freshly squeezed
- 1 Combine all ingredients in a shaker, then add ice.
- 2 Shake and strain over ice in rocks glass.
- 3 Garnish with lime wheel.
