Depending on where you live, the start of April either felt like the commencement of a long anticipated spring, or nature’s cruel April Fool’s joke.
Regardless, warmer weather is slowly but surely on its way, which for many of us means replacing our hot morning coffee with cold brew. Unfortunately, that also usually means overpaying for “artisanally made” coffee.
Cold brew – unlike coffee that’s been made using hot water and then refrigerated – is expensive for a reason. It takes about 24 hours for the cold water to activate the beans and create coffee.
But, contrary to popular belief, it’s also super easy to make. All you need is about 5 minutes of spare time and a little patience.
Just add some coarse coffee (preferably freshly ground) into a jar or pitcher, pour cold water over it and wait about 24 hours. The resulting coffee will be stronger than coffee that has been brewed hot and refrigerated, so when your ice melts, it won’t result in watery swill.

- 1 cup coarsely ground coffee
- 1 pint water
- 1 Pour coarsely ground coffee into large mason jar, then pour cold water over coffee.
- 2 Let set for 8 to 24 hours.
- 3 Filter with funnel and cheesecloth back into separate mason jar. Store in refrigerator and enjoy.
