One of the best parts about brunching – the-noun-turned-verb that’s generally associated with waiting in line for an hour and a half for overpriced eggs – is that you have a built in excuse to day drink. Or so the ladies on Sex in the City led us to believe.

You might as well have a $10 mimosa or Bloody Mary to help you forget that you’re paying $15 for an omelette you probably could have just made at home.

The problem with brunch menus is that too often, the only delicious drink options have alcohol. Sure, there’s generally orange juice, and maybe it’s even freshly squeezed, but when you’re recounting last night’s misadventures with your friends, you want to be drinking something exciting. And every once in awhile you want that exciting drink to be free from booze, because you’ve got to drive home, or you’ve got to finish some weekend work, or you promised yourself you’d actually make it to yoga today.

That’s why more and more restaurants are starting to serve non-alcoholic cocktails. It’s nice to have a complex drink with a balanced flavor profile instead of a glass of OJ.

This faux mimosa has notes of sweet and sour from blood orange juice and tangerine juice, and a nice big spicy kick from chopped jalapeños. Then it’s topped off with sparkling water to make it extra light and refreshing. (Of course, If you want, you can always spike it with booze).

The best part is that you can stay home, where you’ll save the $15 you would have spent on eggs, drink a couple of these, and actually make it to that yoga class.

  • 8 ounces blood orange juice
  • 8 ounces tangerine juice
  • 8 ounces club soda

  • 2 tablespoons jalapeños, finely chopped
