One of the most underrated culinary joys of the summer is that its berry season. These small, nutritious, flavor-dense morsels of sweetness are at their best (and cheapest) at this time of year, when farmers’ markets have an abundance of wild berries packed with way more flavor than the comparatively bland grocery-store varieties you’re used to.
And berries aren’t just for snacking. They make great desserts, breakfasts and even cocktails. Take this blueberry mojito, for instance.
Blueberries play perfectly with the mint, adding a hint of summer to this refreshing rum classic. They also make this mojito pretty exciting to drink, because, well, when’s the last time you drank a blue cocktail?

- 1 cup fresh mint leaves
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 4 tablespoons fresh or frozen blueberries, divided
- 3/4 cup lemonade
- 1 splash soda water
- 1 ounce light rum
- 1 ounce dark rum
- For garnish mint sprig
- For garnish lime slice
- 1 Fill the glass three-quarters with ice. Add lemonade until the glass is two-thirds full, then top off with splash of soda, light rum and remaining blueberries, and stir.
- 2 Slowly pour dark rum into the drink so it floats on top. Garnish with a sprig of mint and slice of lime.
- 3 In a glass, add mint leaves, lime juice and sugar. Mash the ingredients with the back of a spoon or a muddler until fragrant.
- 4 Add 2 tablespoons of the blueberries and mash until juicy.
